Dennis Helfer along with Elaine Helfer were the parents of Helfer at the time she was born. The two are from German, English, Swedish and Norwegian heritage. She graduated from Stettler's William E. Hay Composite High School. The three sisters she had, Tammy, Tara and Trena resided and worked on their family's farm. In queue at the theatre, a scout for a modeling agency noticed Helfer.
